This Fall I decided to start a capsule wardrobe and it has been such a fun experiment for me! It’s been so refreshing to have only items that I LOVE in my closet. Throughout this whole process I’ve realized how LESS can sometimes be MORE. It’s crazy how before when I had way more clothes, I felt so limited in my outfit choices and could never find anything to wear. Now, with fewer pieces I feel as though my options are endless and there are so many different outfits I can create! In this blog post I want to dive into the process of starting a capsule wardrobe a little bit. If you are more interested in just the pieces in my capsule, you can scroll down to find the video I made showing all 40 pieces as well as the links to everything. Let’s get started!
Even though I am by no means an expert in fashion and this whole capsule wardrobe thing is still very new to me, I want to share the process I went through to minimalize my wardrobe to hopefully give you some ideas on how you can do it too! Before I started my capsule I did so. much. research. I read tons and tons of blogs to try and find the method that would probably work best for me. Something I learned that ended up making the whole journey a lot easier was that there isn’t just one specific way to do it! Some people do 20 pieces, some do 30, others don’t even put a number limit. Some people have one capsule for the whole year & others have a different one for each season (I am the latter). The whole thing can be totally personalized based on how YOU want to do it!
For me, one of the things that I noticed I did differently was add more dresses. None of the capsule wardrobes I saw had very many dresses but I love to wear dresses and skirts! So, when I was ‘designing’ my Fall Wardrobe I just included more dresses. Putting together my capsule was a long, but fun process! I took it very seriously and wanted to make sure that everything would work together and that I wouldn’t get sick of any of the pieces. I am going to share with you all the things that I learned, and step by step how I created my wardrobe!
Before I even touched my closet, I wanted to make sure I knew what my personal style was. This is something that I think will always be changing to some degree, but it is important to know what you like to wear and what clothes fit best on you! So, again, I did so. much. research. I basically just got on Pinterest and looked up personal style worksheets and different articles on what looks good on different body types. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am a firm believer that if you like something, you should wear it. But, if you dress in ways that compliment your figure it does make a difference!
One of my favorite Style Guides is this free printable. After filling it out, I felt like I knew what direction to take my wardrobe in and I finally got the courage to really step into the process!
Hooray! Now for the fun part!! Hahah just kidding, I absolutely despise cleaning out my closet. It’s the worst. But, it gets better after this step don’t worry! The first thing you need to do is take e v e r y t h i n g out of your closet. And I mean EVERYTHING! Take it all out and throw it on your bed! Don’t be too worried about being organized yet.
Now what I did was make three different piles, a ‘yes’ pile, a ‘maybe’ pile & a ‘no’ pile.’Yeses’ were pieces that I knew I loved and couldn’t bare to part with. ‘Maybes’ were items I was unsure about and didn’t want in either pile just yet. ‘Nos’ were obviously things that I either knew I didn’t want, didn’t fit anymore, or were damaged. From here I took alllllll of the pieces from ‘yes’ and ‘maybe’ and tried them on. All of them.
Doing this made it really easy for me to make a firm choice on what I wanted to keep and what I didn’t. Once I had the ‘yeses’ hanging back up in my closet and the ‘nos’ bagged up and ready to donate, I could see the trends in my clothes. I noticed materials I like, patterns, fit, colors, etc… This is where step 3 comes in!
This is my favorite step! Now that you’ve figured out your personal style and cleaned out your closet, it’s time to ‘design’ your wardrobe! The first thing I did was come up with a color scheme that I could already kind of see forming with the clothes in my closet. For example, a few of my colors ended up being neutral browns and tans, creams, olive green, mustard yellow, rust, etc… A lot of the capsules I saw didn’t have a ton of color, but I wanted to keep the colors I love to wear in mine! If you wear mostly neutrals, then most of your wardrobe will be made up of that, but if you don’t want to get rid of color you don’t have to! This step is pretty crucial to making sure that your pieces go together and you can mix & match everything!
After you’ve got a color scheme going, you’ll want to plan out what you’re going to buy. There’s kind of a few steps to this so I’ll try to explain as best as I can… The first thing I did was try to find things that were missing from my wardrobe. For example, this could be a light jacket or a pair of boots, things that are more of an essential. (Keep in mind what the weather is like where you live depending on the season so that your clothing choices are practical!) Those are things that you’ll want to purchase for your capsule. Once you’ve got all the essentials you can shop around to find some cute new pieces that you want for your wardrobe.
If you are considering starting a capsule wardrobe or even just simplifying your closet, I HIGHLY recommend it!! This has been a game changer for me and I’m not kidding when I say it seriously has made my life a million times easier when it comes to getting dressed in the morning! I can literally make an outfit out of a n y t h i n g in my closet and I LOVE IT!! I’m already starting to plan my Winter Wardrobe! 😉
